Film Discussions
Film is an exploration of motion. Single images or frames are lined up and projected in rapid succession creating the illusion of a moving picture. The conditions of the possibility of experiencing motion, are time and space. Therefore, it follows that the primary subjects of exploration in film are that of time and space.
Although intrinsically linked, its easier to examine separately what each subject has to offer. Time allows one to investigate a character and possibility its development, the dance between existence non existence, moral consequences, and much more. Space provides the canvas with no limits in which one can observe the enormity of scale, beauty and its absence, unknowable objects or the periphery of sensations ability. In combination the offerings of space and time of film often push forth questions that I don’t desire to answer but rather love exploring.
What if I was a being who did not die nor know what it would be to die? I could imagine life might feel meaningless. On the other hand, my story will end one day and that does not artificially create meaning. Or perhaps, my story is actually that of a being who does not die, and I am just caught in the illusion of life and death.
The consequences of the worlds created through film are endlessly open to an examination. As one goes further down the rabbit hole they may leave the content of the film behind. At this stage one’s ideas may start to intrude on the objective film, creating a wholly subjective experience. In the moments where one is observing not the film as it is, but rather as it has been subjectively created, the illusion of motion picture transforms into hallucinations. No longer is one just observing exterior stimulus, but rather projecting an internal discourse.
