Why Not Kill Frank?
My day began with my eyes opening; I looked at the time and rolled out of bed. I brushed my teeth; got dressed; made breakfast; ate breakfast; put on a mask; grabbed the kitchen knife; walked next door and stabbed my neighbor as he ate his toast. I hid the body in the cupboard; waited for his wife to come downstairs then I stabbed her also; and then I found myself hungry so I went home to eat lunch. I made a tuna fish sandwich; ate it; and then went over to the other neighbor’s house... A lack of reasonable explanation or warning is bit horrifying. That’s how John Carpenters Halloween operates. All we know is the evil guy is doing evil things. No reason why, no clue to what set him off, nothing.
Michael Myers never runs, he never looks excited, doesn’t look angry, sad or satisfied, no one action gets any special notice from him at all. In his first killing he is more interested in the knife then in his victim (his sister). Later Michael stabs poor Bob so forcefully that he is pinned to the cupboards, feet left dangling off the ground. The only reaction we get out of Michael is a curious side glance, absolutely no recognition of extraordinary activity taking place, it’s as if what just happened was just as ordinary as eating a tuna sandwich. He is truly a pure psychopath, no emotional response about anything at all.
Why is someone being completely cut off from his or her emotions terrifying? I think it’s because these people actually exist, there are people who are just as likely to cut off your and foot stick it in a freezer, then they are to shake your hand. We like to think there are laws, like gravity that make sure things stay in order. We desperately want to believe that acting according to the social contract is one of those laws that is always maintained. Now it’s fair to say that the social contract only applies to us humans, so monsters are exempt, but psychopaths like Michael Myers seem like they are humans so it just doesn’t add up. If he is exempt from the social contract then it proves that it is really just a made up law, and there is no reason why should I follow such superstition.
